Measure Area by Counting Unit Squares

Area is the amount of flat surface inside a shape, measured in square units (e.g., cm², m²).

To find area:

  • Count the unit squares that fit inside the shape
  • For rectangles: Area = Length x Width

Worked Example
Rectangle 4 cm x 3 cm. Find the area.
SolutionArea = 4 x 3 = 12 cm². Count: 4 columns x 3 rows = 12 unit squares.
2
Worked Example
Square with side 5 cm. Find the area.
SolutionArea = 5 x 5 = 25 cm². 5 rows of 5 squares.
3
Worked Example
An irregular shape made of 8 full squares and 2 half-squares. Find the area.
SolutionArea = 8 + (2 x 0.5) = 8 + 1 = 9 cm².

Key Points
